PHIL BOWEN (link) is an Ocularist (maker of custom ocular prosthetics) from the Greater Toronto Area. He practices at Toronto Eye Prosthetics, located in Toronto and Hamilton. As well as being involved in the Eyeborg Project, Phil is the apprentice chair for the American Society of Ocularists. When not at work, he can be found out on the water cruising and racing sailboats.
MARTIN LING has been developing minaturised and low power sensor devices at the University of Edinburgh since 2004, including the world’s first fully wireless, full-body inertial motion capture system. His designs have been used everywhere from aircraft to operating theatres. When not behind a computer or soldering iron, he can usually be found mucking about with innovative octo-copters.
KOSTA GRAMMATIS (kosta.is) has researched at and consulted for the MIT Media Labs and has worked on projects ranging from bionic eyes, satellites, spacecraft, and vision testing systems for developing countries. Projects he has worked on have been awarded TIME’s best invention of 2009, Vodaphone’s Wireless Innovation Award, and won the MIT Global Challenge and a Google Innovation Grant. He has spoken at TEDx, the United Nations, and numerous space and communications conferences. He has moved on from the Eyeborg Project for now as he is busy bringing the internet to those parts of the world without access at ahumanright.org.
ROB SPENCE (robspence.tv) is a filmmaker who lost an eye. Naturally he decided to modify his prosthetic eye by embedding a video camera in it. Rob works as a director and producer in Toronto, Canada and has had his work on Discovery, The CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation), Vision, and Space TV. His cult hit documentary film Let’s All Hate Toronto was a special presentation at Hot Docs film festival. He has a Time Magazine Best Inventions of the year award and was a Honoree in The Webby Awards Best Branded Content division.
MARCIN JAWORSKI M.D. creator and project leader of NextEye Prosthesis. Resident doctor in Ophthalmology, passionate in new technologies. Graduated from Silesian Medical University in Katowice, where obtained scholarship for grades. Two years ago, he decided to improve life quality of people wearing eye prosthesis. Succeeded in implementing in implementing into the clinic a new system of treating amblyopia and strabismus with the use of augmented reality. Author and lecturer of numerous publications on, among others, new technologies aimed at intra-operative position of eyeball.
